Why people don’t subscribe to your blog and what you can do about it

November 22, 2013 By Nwosu Desmond 20 Comments

Most time bloggers get caught up in producing contents and promoting it, and often times forget growing their subscriber base. If you really intend to make money from your blog then you really need to grow your subscriber list.

Whether you have totally ignored growing your subscriber list or have tried so many things and yet people won’t subscribe to your blog, there may be a couple of reasons why people don’t subscribe to your blog and I intend to share them with you and also give you working solutions on how to get your visitors to subscribe to your blog.

Here are some reasons why people don’t subscribe to your blog and how you can get them to join your mailing list easily. Remember to tell me what you think of this post at the end of it via the comments and if you have working solutions that will help anyone looking to grow his blog’s mailing list, please share via the comments.

How good is your content? I can’t stop hammering on the content quality we publish on our blogs. Your content quality MUST always be good enough to convince someone to subscribe to your mailing list. Why would anyone want to subscribe to your blog when the quality of your content is so poor? Why would anyone subscribe to your blog when your content cannot solve their problems or enrich their knowledge?

You have to offer something valuable in your blog for people to want to subscribe to your list. You have to demonstrate the value of subscribing to your blog via your blog posts, publish rich contents and explain to your visitors why they need to subscribe to your blog. Convince them with the quality of your blog posts; solve their problems with your posts, sell your ideas to them and win their hearts. That way they can easily subscribe to your blog.

So if your content quality is poor, improve it by making researches and writing contents that will help your readers.

How is your online reputation?  People cannot subscribe to your list if they do not trust you enough to entrust you with their email address. In the past I have heard of sites that harvested their subscriber’s emails and sold them. People are always careful where they drop their emails, no one want to subscribe to a blog that will use their details for financial benefits, no one want to subscribe to a blog that will spam their inbox all day.

People will need to trust you to be able to subscribe to your blog and you really need to earn their trust. Your online reputation is all the reputation you have online, so you need to earn people’s trust for them to subscribe to your blog’s mailing list. Improve your blog’s reputation online and this could encourage people to subscribe to your blog.

I know someone will ask “how can i improve my blog reputation online?” he answer is simple. Grow your page rank, improve your alexa rank, grow the number of fans on your social media fan pages etc. People want to see how many other people trust you before they can trust you.

Do you ask them to subscribe? (call-to-action): Another reason why people don’t subscribe to your blog may be because you don’t ask them to. People often times respond to call to actions when they trust you as a result of the quality of content you provide for them or your blog’s online reputation.

Ask people to subscribe to your blog especially if you have met the other conditions listed above. After your posts ask your readers to perform one action or the other on your blog and let subscribing to your mailing list be one of the things you’ll ask them to do.

Is your subscription form clearly displayed? Do you have a nice subscription form on your blog and is it clearly displayed where people can easily see it? Don’t make it difficult for your visitors to subscribe to your blog, clearly display your email subscription form where people can easily see it and use it.

Often times it is advisable to add an email subscription form immediately below your post or on the top right hand corner of you sidebar. Put it right in their face and make it standout. Also ensure to use a nice and stylish subscription form so as to easily attract subscribers.

Why people don’t subscribe to your blog and what you can do about it

Do you encourage engagements on your blog? Encourage engagements on your blog such as commenting and social media sharing. Try and build relationships with your audience by replying to their comments, respond to their questions and inquiries. Do not ignore comments or requests, when you help them out, they will trust you and can easily subscribe to your blog.

Do you have a dedicated subscription landing page?  If you can’t funnel the visitors coming to your blog you will most likely lose out on potential subscribers. Apart from the email subscription form you have on your sidebar and probably below your post area, you also need to create a dedicated subscription landing page.

You can also create a thank you page such as http://www.netmediablog.com/thank-you/ with an email subscription form and redirect visitors to that page after they leave comments on your blog.

Do you host giveaways? Giveaway is another nice way to get people to subscribe to your blog. Everybody like freebies and won’t mind subscribing to your blog in exchange to win a prize. So if people are not subscribing to your blog, try running a giveaway contest and see if people won’t subscribe. This is a method I have used to grow my mailing list and I am recommending it to you.

How is your site traffic? Another reason why people may not be subscribing to your blog is because people hardly visit your site. If your site traffic is good there is a higher tendency people will subscribe to your blog especially when you have met the above listed criteria. So improve your site traffic via SEO and your social media activities. You can check other tips I had previously shared on this blog on how to drive traffic to your site.

Getting people to subscribe to your blog is not a rocket science it simply involves appealing to people’s desire by providing them with good quality content, a suitable platform and tools to enable them subscribe to your blog. So if people don’t subscribe to your blog, change things around a little using the guides I shared here with you.

Now over to you…

How did you get people to subscribe to your blog? Do you have a secret formula to get people to subscribe to your blog? I hope you won’t mind sharing with me here, use the comment form below to share with me other ways than the ones listed here how to get people to subscribe to a blog.

Probably the most detailed post on this topic!
Many say – ‘The money is in the list’ and this must be true because many say it!
I’m also creating list and it is still an infant. I guess I married too late :D
With this late experience, I learned that nobody will subscribe to your list automatically unless your blog is extraordinary or yourself is extraordinary. Could that be true :O)
The best trick to overcome this can be creating at least one reason for your readers are compelled to subscribe.
Presenting giveaway and contest results only to the mailing list can be one good and easy attempt. I announce top commenter, top blogger as well as the best post positions to my subscribers only.
Similarly I offered some downloads exclusively to my subscribers only. This helped me to grow the list a bit better. I hope my list will be adult very soon :D

Very nice post, its really worth reading your post. I think we all facing this problem. I like your GiveAway option. I will give it try in near future.
I am writing tech tips and tricks and the visitors are reluctant to subscribe. they found my page only when they are in trouble. I cant expect them to subscribe at that time. :-(

I have to be honest and say I’m not a huge fan of your blog design, but the content is just about spot on :)

As Suresh told, it is a complete post on “email subscription”

Online reputation is more important to make new subscribers and I do agree with your other views.

Am having subscription form but am not implementing the “call to action”. I know, its a great mistake, but due to lack of time, it is hard to execute all possible ways.

Anyway, will try to follow some tips to get more subscribers, thanks for sharing this useful post :)

Showing the number of feed subscribers is also another way to show the reputation (only if we have a good no. of subscribers)

For many building email list could be tedious as software like Aweber costs more than what they pay for the hosting.
Thanks for sharing great post Nwosu
