URL Submission to Search Engines

February 3, 2013 By anilvalvi 16 Comments

URL Submission to search engines is very important to SEO. URL submission is simply a way of submitting your url (domain name) to search engines for indexing and ranking. The process of continuously assessing and refining a website to get the highest search engine query rankings is known as search engine optimization, or SEO. Among marketing strategy tactics, SEO is quickly becoming one of the most vital being used nowadays.

Whether running a business straight from the comfort of the home or one of the top Fortune 500 establishments, SEO is unarguably essential. It is often confused with the mere process of domain submission to search engines, of which the most well-known are Yahoo!, Google, and Bing.

url submission to search enginesMany companies, website owners and bloggers have resorted to so-called experts or consultants who charge them substantial amounts just to submit their domains or URL to search engines. Expending a little effort to familiarizing themselves with a very basic, yet useful SEO technique, these users can be well on their way to saving money on their SEO needs.

Majority of internet users today have difficulty identifying more than three or four search engines, and with good reason. There are only six or seven that can be truly categorized as search engines. Many others fall under the aptly-called spam-fueled link farms, which actually downgrade the sites that they affiliate with.

Most of the so-called experts mentioned include search engine submission as a primary service in their inflated fees. In reality, this process is very simple in that most people can do this for themselves in minutes. Avoid marketers who promise to submit the client’s URL to multitudes of search engines, or even guarantee a specific traffic volume or ranking.

Laying the groundwork for URL Submission

The internet as we know it spans the entire globe and advocates unbiased treatment, so it is no wonder it has become one of the most attractive marketing tool for people all over the world. Given these notions, URL submission is a level play field for marketers, providing them with a scalable framework to assess their performance. With the objective of any SEO effort being to attract more visitors, and subsequently more customers, such a campaign must be based on several plans aimed at increasing site traffic. But prior to realizing this goal, the website must first and foremost rank higher in page listings based on relevant searches.

To achieve this, one needs to remember the three foremost search engines: Google, Yahoo!, Bing or formerly MSN which is owned by Microsoft.

Based on an article recently published in The Motley Fool, these three mentioned are the dominant players in the realms of web search, with 93.8 percent of all traffic. Google places first with 65.5 percent, followed by Yahoo! taking in 16.8 percent, and Bing 11.5 percent.

Although at first it may appear too complex to accomplish, a basic SEO tactic is as follows.

URL Submission to Google

Open the page http://www.google.com/addurl/. The page will have three input boxes in the center. In the first box, enter the URL, making sure to type in the full version including http://. For example, you can enter http://www.yourwebsite.com as your URL. Use the vacant Comment section to input relevant keywords. Verification is needed, and the user would need to be confirmed as a non-spammer.

URL Submission to Yahoo

Before submitting a URL to Yahoo! a free email account is needed to be set up as a prerequisite. Proceed to http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html, and then click on the tool Submit Your Site For Free located at the topmost center of the page. After this click on submit a Website or Webpage. Enter the URL in the top right box (consult figure below). To prevent confusion remove the http:// inside the box. Open the website in a new browse tab and simply copy the exact URL as showing in the address bar located at the top of the homepage. Paste the copied content into the upper right box on Yahoo!

URL Submission to Bing

A feature is being used by Bing to crawl the web. With this feature, Bing asserts that several sites will be made available for indexing sans the need for the user to manually submit URLs. Doing a simple search using Bing, however, will show a website’s presence on the most recent search engine.

Open the page http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx and type in the entire URL, including the http://. Click Submit. By two to three weeks the user can verify if the URL has been included.

Search engine optimization has become an effective instrument in many marketing plans today, without overtaxing budgets or breaking the bank. This is due to the fact that the open source movement has the ability to surpass conventional marketing media and tactics.  For the marketer, URL submission should be a basic practice in the quest for an effective SEO strategy. It is easy and anyone with 10-15 minutes to spare can do it. Most of all, it’s free.

URL Submission to Baidu

Baidu is a Chinese Search Engine and does not automatically index URL’s.  So to submit your URL to Baidu simply click on http://www.baidu.com/search/url_submit.html, type in your URL into the obvious query which already states “http://”, enter the 4 digit verification letters/numbers and press the ‘Enter’ key to submit.

Note: Baidu is traditionally written in Chinese language so I recommend you use Google Chrome browser while visiting this site for easy translation.

URL Submission to Yandex

Yandex is a Russian search engine and it doesn’t matter what language your site was built with, they can translate it to Russian. So if you have any need for outreach to Russian internet users then submitting your URL to Yandex is imperative.

To submit your URL to Yandex, simply go to the Yandex Webmaster Tool, Click on the Add your site and enter your site’s URL and click the ‘add site’ button. Note Yandex webmaster tool will require you to verify your site through either uploading an empty file they will provide for you into your server, or add a META tag to your blog or add DNS record in text format to your hosting account.

I hope with this guide you can now be able to submit your URL to the major search engines. URL submission is the first step to getting indexed and ranked. On a personal note, I have never needed to “submit” a URL to a search engine in the usual sense on any of the sites I run for maybe 3-4 years.

I just submit my xml sitemap in Google webmaster tools and get the content shared – and just from that I get crawlers from Bing, Yandex, Baidu and all the rest.

Although, Bing and Yahoo seem to be VERY slow at indexing in comparison to Google.

You make a good point about people selling “URL submission” services for stupid prices, even a lot of web hosts sell this as a monthly service with a stupid price tag – this needs to be avoided at all costs.

I totally agree with your method but the issue is that not all webmaster especially new ones know about submitting xml sitemap to Google Webmasters so this method provides them with alternative means of getting indexed quickly.

Good point Nwosu, on a personal level what I’m curious about is which method Google favours most. Sort of how deep the crawl and how fast pages are crawled.
