Today i want to briefly discuss the different types of cloud computing for those that may have been wondering what terms like public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud and community cloud could mean. I hope you find it easy to understand.
Types of Cloud Computing: There are four types of cloud computing namely public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud and community cloud. So let me discuss them one by one.
Public cloud: Public cloud is a cloud computing term that relates to a cloud computing model in which a service provider makes available application, storage and other resources over the internet. Public cloud may be free or pay-as-you-use model. Public cloud companies like Amazon Elastic clouds, Google AppEngine, Windows Azure service platforms and many more all own infrastructures at their data centre and offer access through the internet. They manage the services.
Private cloud: Private cloud is a cloud computing term that relates to getting the cloud deployed exclusively for an organization or a department of a company for specific needs. Private cloud may be hosted or managed internally or by a private cloud vendor. Private Cloud service companies can design and develop their cloud services specifically for a certain demand. This type of cloud services are offered to those that specifically need it.
So we can’t agree less that private cloud is a form of cloud computing with service access limited to customers with specific needs and have some control or ownership of the service implementation. A private cloud is managed by the organization it serves. It is more expensive than public clouds.
Hybrid cloud: Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing term that relates to the type of cloud computing that involves the composition of two or more clouds which could be private or public. An organization may decide to manage some resources in-house and other on an externally hosted cloud. For instance, a company can decide to host their website in-house while they save their database on a public cloud for safety.
Community cloud: This type of cloud computing involves the sharing of infrastructure between organizations of the same community. Simply explained it is a multi-tenant infrastructure that is shared among organizations of same community.
