Taking advantage of Search trends in driving traffic to your blog

July 25, 2013 By Nwosu Desmond 42 Comments

Today I want to let you in to a little secret of how to drive traffic to your site using search trends. Search trends are simply popular search terms over a period of time. From experience I have discovered these popular search terms or search trends as I will mostly refer to it in this article are short-lived. Search trends gives valuable insight into what people are searching for more at any particular time.

Apart from the fact that you can use search trends for keyword research and generating content ideas, you can also use search trends to drive traffic to your blog, and that will constitute the major part of this article. The idea of the article is a simple one; we are going to learn how we can find search trends and how we can exploit them to driving massive traffic to our website.

Next time you are planning to write a blog post, bear in mind that web search trends can be used to discover valuable blogging ideas. That way you can discover hot content topic ideas that could drive traffic to your blog.

Let me show you a perfect example, as at the time of writing this post “Android 4.3” is trending on Google hot searches. See image below;

Taking advantage of Search trends in driving traffic to your blog

Google Search Trends

Looking at the example above, you will notice that the search trend for “Android 4.3” is on the increase from probably May 2013 to July 2013 and may continue to August 2013. Normally Google trends also suggest related terms and their rate of increase in search, and you can choose to sample your result worldwide or narrow it to any particular region of the world.

Another tool I find interesting is the Twitter trends. Take a look at the terms trending on Twitter from the image below;

Taking advantage of Search trends in driving traffic to your blog

Twitter Trends

You will see “William and Kate” which rightly should be trending most worldwide as a result of the birth of their first baby.  Same goes with Youtube search trends or even mobile search trends.

These tools give valuable insight into what is trending or simply put what is being searched for more at any given point in time. You can consider writing a blog post around such search trend terms and tap into the huge traffic it generates, if you optimize your post well you may just rank for a popular term.

But I must warn you, traffic from search trends can give you a spike of traffic to your blog but often times as I said earlier it is short-lived. So if you want to use this approach, then be sure to constantly post on breaking news, products unveilings, brand events etc. Though the traffic may be short-lived, the traffic and earnings from such a short period of time may even surpass what you earn for a whole month or more. So take advantage of this method and drive traffic always to your blog.

Target suitable keywords you know you can easily rank for in search engine using Google Trends or Twitter Trends and boost your traffic and earnings even if it is for a short while only. Repeating it with another keyword over and over will ensure a steady flow of massive traffic to your blog. You get the idea now?

    My perspective is, That if using many of the social media applications, platforms etc for business purposes, the primary reason is to drive more traffic to your web site where, in reality, you can engage far more effectively with potential and interested fans, followers, visitors.

    Hi Nwosu,

    I really appreciate your finding and your generosity to share the information to blogosphere! However, I have a couple of confusions in my head.

    First, you displayed the Google trending graph but did not mentioned how to find the trending keywords and its analytics as you have displayed. Everyone may not know the basics.

    Second, the topic is trending and we tapped in the traffic, then how can we monetize it? If it is Adsense or contextual Ads, I guess the advertisers are not up yet to offer high paying ads for such keywords. Is there any special monetization method for such a huge traffic?

    Would love your reply on my curiosities.

    Hopping on trends can skyrocket your traffic. Make sure the story relates to your niche most of the time; an offbeat story is OK here and there. Thanks!

    I’m somehow in skeptical about using these trends. There is obviously no doubt that these are going to bring in traffic but the question is, for how long?
    I would rather prefer writing evergreen posts. A post which will e using even for the next 10 years instead of concentrating on ‘kate and William’. The media already has that covered!

  17. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

    July 25, 2013 at 9:33 pm

  18. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

    July 25, 2013 at 9:34 pm

    If you read the article you will see that posting trendy topics always can generate steady traffic, you don’t have to stop if it is working for you. Thats what most big blogs are doing.

  19. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

    July 25, 2013 at 9:40 pm

    I mentioned Google Trend within the article, its just like any normal search where you can search for any keyword. Then you can choose a time frame to display its trend or region of your choice. Like the example i gave above, Android 4.3 has been trending for months now and there must have been advertisers now for such keywords. Don’t you think so? So whether it is contextual or adsense, the traffic from such trending topics can overflow into other pages of your site. If you have designed a blog that can retain your visitors from one page to the other, i assure you that you will be smiling to the bank every month end.
