I recently upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and since then i can say that the user experience of Windows 8 has been awesome. But just recently I noticed a new kind of error in Windows 8, this error won’t let me open any folder or even launch an application. Whenever I try to launch any application or program on my Windows 8 PC, it will give me an error saying;
“The extended attributes are inconsistent”
Then I started seeking solution on how to solve this problem, I even considered a total reformat of my Windows 8 PC which I am sure would’ve solved the problem but I was scared I will lose my files and settings. I tried system restore but it never fixed my PC. I started uninstalling all the recently installed programs on my PC and once more to no avail.
I even installed Bitdefender Windows 8 security, scanned my PC and no threat was found, then I figured it wasn’t as a result of a malware or virus.
How I solved ‘The Extended Attributes are Inconsistent’.
The problem was caused by a theme I was using; I was using a Bing theme which changes my desktop theme to the daily Bing wallpaper every day. Clearly the problem was caused as a result of the sound not being able to be loaded and played by Windows.
To solve this problem I simply changed the sound theme by right clicking on the desktop, select ‘Personalization’ then change the Sounds to ‘Windows Default’ and the extended attributes are inconsistent error was solved.

I had the same error with windows 7 ultimate. This error prevented windows from installing updates to adobe acrobat, installing antivirus, and countless other programs. I was finally able to resolve this problem by changing the sound them to windows default. Thanks for the help
Wow, I honestly cannot believe that worked. I recently got infected with a bunch of malware, and adware programs. My antivirus got rid of them, but I thought it hadn’t done a good job because that error was coming up on certain programs, but this fixed it thanks a lot.
Glad it worked for you.
