Netbooks Vs. Laptops: Things To Consider Before Buying

July 24, 2012 By Kristine 2 Comments

Laptop computers have progressed tremendously these days. People used to be amazed with this device during the time of inception when laptops used to be so thick and heavy enough to break one’s back if carried in bags. Today, these devices come in lighter and thinner sizes which make laptops serve its primary purpose better which is portability and convenience in getting the same functions of a desktop PC or even much better with the advanced and sophisticated laptop models.

A notable development in the laptop arena is the creation of a different category called netbooks. These are laptops that are smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the standard laptops. However, with these reductions on the different features of a netbook also comes, its lesser capabilities than what laptops can do.

Having mentioned the overview of netbooks and how it is different from laptops, let us take a look at what to consider before buying either a netbook or laptop.

Netbooks Vs. Laptops:

Purpose: One of the most important things to consider is the purpose for which the consumer will be using the device. Since laptops have greater memory and faster processors, it is the best option for work related tasks, especially if the nature of work deals with computer intensive tasks. But if the owner will use it for minor computer tasks such as using simple programs, check and reply to emails, visit and update social media accounts. Netbooks are also ideal as a back-up device for consumers who needed a more compact device to connect to the internet if there are away from their primary working computer.

Mobility: Although both devices give mobility as compared to desktop computers, people who need to be always on the go like sales agents, freelancers, students, etc. will benefit with netbooks due to its lighter weight, smaller size, and longer battery life. For those who have a stable office or home-based business and will least likely encounter instances when they have to bring their work outside of their business locations, they can do better with laptops.

Need for Convenience: Typing continuously and in long hours can be inconvenient with netbooks due to its smaller keyboard but it can take getting used to. Laptops are more convenient to work with due to its larger keyboard. The larger screen size also makes it more comfortable to view the work in the screen.

Need for input output device, disk drives, and connectivity: Those who are eyeing the netbooks should bear in mind that most of these devices do not have a disk drive, although they do have USB ports that are able to connect various external devices these days.

Online Gaming, Video and Image Editing: We know a lot of computer users who loved playing intense online games, watch video streams and movies. Some even work as video editors and for these type of people, a laptop with advanced features will be best. Netbooks will be having a hard time performing these tasks due to their slower processor.
