How to successfully monetize your website

December 18, 2014 By Daniel Dob 3 Comments

Recent studies have shown that tens of millions of domains were registered until now and that millions of sites were made, but not many website owners go ahead and monetize their site for a variety of reasons, the number one being related to the simple fact that they do not know how. The truth is that there are websites which can be considered monetizable while there are other websites which cannot, and it all mostly depends on the niche, and whether it is a blog or business site.

Is your site monetizable?

Well, the answer to this question mostly depends on the nature of your website. It is worth to keep in mind that sites which are usually monetized are blogs and those which offer different web applications and are not in taboo niches.

Studies have shown that it can be much harder for an individual to monetize a site which promotes business services, as these mostly rely on orders to stay alive, but not on the funds that can be gathered by monetization. Another aspect to keep in mind when it comes down to deciding whether to monetize your website or not refers to the number of visitors that you get, the quality, but also the mount of content that is available on your site at a current moment in time.

With this being said, it is important to have at least a constant flow of around 100 visitors a month, have a number of articles on the site in order to allow users to have something to read and do on it, but also have a website which looks great from the design point of view and where users can have quite a good experience.

If you feel like your website fulfils all of the factors mentioned above, then you can go ahead and jump to the next part of the article.

Monetization by placing ads

This represents the number one way for a website to be monetized. Thanks to the services offered by ad providers such as AdSense or Amazon, once a site fulfils a couple of conditions, users can go ahead and apply for ads. Once the application is accepted, ads will begin to appear on certain areas of the site promoting similar products and services in the same niche that you may be already promoting over on your website.

Through this process, website owners earn cash whenever someone clicks on their ads. However, if you decide to go this route, be wary not to click on your own ads, or to encourage others to do so, as this will most probably get your site penalised, which is definitely something that you would not like to happen, as it will greatly affect the number of visitors that your website might be getting.

Monetization through affiliate programs

While monetization through affiliate programs still somehow requires the placement of different ads on your site, users earn only when they direct visitors to the website of the affiliate and the user purchases something for them. It seems like a successful affiliate program ran on a site can actually go ahead and generate a lot more revenue, as the funds that are obtained through it can be much greater and vary based on the products which are being sold by the affiliate and purchased by visitors from your website.

By keeping these two monetization options in mind, just about anyone can create a website and earn money from it as long as the tips mentioned above are followed. There are website owners who make millions on a monthly basis through smart monetization, but to get to that, you’ll have to go ahead and start off low and then build your way towards a highly monetized and successful website.
