It is no more news that Microsoft Windows media player cannot play every media formats. It is common to occasionally come across media formats Windows media player cannot play. This is always a frustrating situation. Windows media player only supports the following media formats (.avi, .mov, .m1v,.mpeg, .mpg, .mpe, .m1v, .mp2, .mpv2, .mod, .vob,.mp4, .mov, .m4v,.wtv, .dvr-ms, .qt,.m2ts, .m2t, .wm, .wmv, and .asf). Microsoft tactically shunned third-party file types like .ogg, .mov and divx etc.
While some media players like VLC handles these media formats easily. Some people may not want to install other media players like VLC on their machines for obvious reasons. When you try to play unsupported media formats, Windows media player pops up an error saying; “You do not have the Right Codec installed to Play This file” as a result of an absent Audio or Video Codecs.
