How to Dual boot a PC with Windows 8 and Windows 7

September 24, 2012 By Nwosu Desmond 1 Comment

If you have a Windows 7 PC and want to test run the new Windows 8 operating system without losing your current Windows 7 setup, a dual-boot system might be a good way to get into it. Dual-booting your PC with Windows 8 and Windows 7 will let you use both operating systems. I want to guild you on how to dual boot your PC with Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating system.

How to Dual boot a PC with Windows 8 and Windows 7

Step 1: Backup your files and documents

Caution: Before you proceed with creating a dual boot for your PC with Windows 8 and Windows 7, create a backup of all your files and documents. In the unfortunate event of an incomplete installation, you can restore your files and documents without losing any. Windows 7 has an in-built backup feature but you may require third-party software for image backup.

Step 2: Partition your hard-disk

Create a partition on your hard-disk of at least 16GB for 32-bit version and 20GB for 64-bit version for Windows 8 installation using the “Disk management” feature in your control panel. Search for “disk management” from the “search programs and files” on the start button, click on the “Create and format hard disk partitions” from the list displayed. Shrink the volume and enter your desired size and hit the shrink button, it may take awhile to shrink the partition, but once it’s been completed, an unallocated section of the size you entered will be created.

Step 3: Install the Windows 8

Insert the Windows 8 installer DVD in your PC DVD drive; restart your PC, boot from your DVD drive. Choose your preferred language and install. Accept the software license and choose the “Custom” installation type.

Caution: Do not choose the UPGRADE option.

Then choose the unallocated space in your hard disk and start the installation of your Windows 8 on this space. This installation may take up to 20 minutes to complete.

Once your Windows 8 finishes installing, your system will reboot into Windows 8 normally, but on next restart, a dual-boot menu will be displayed giving you the option to choose either windows 8 or Windows 7 as your operating system. After about 30 seconds it will automatically load Windows 8 if you do not choose any OS by yourself.
