How to tether your laptop using your iPhone as a wireless modem

March 15, 2012 By Nwosu Desmond 3 Comments

Imagine you have your iPhone with you and your laptop and out of a wifi area and you really have important need for the internet. After my last blog post on “How you can tether your iPad with a 3G phone” , today I am going to discuss how you can use your iPhone as a modem and connect your laptop to the internet.

The iPhone is a 3G enabled phone with a high speed internet potential. Tethering your iPhone will surely provide you with fast internet connectivity.

HOW TO TETHER YOUR LAPTOP USING YOUR  iPHONE AS A WIRELESS MODEM:

1. The first step to getting your laptop connected to the internet using your iPhone as a wireless modem is to jail break your iPhone.

How to Jailbreak your iPhone:  Download and install Quickpwn and follow the instructions to jail break your iPhone. Remember that jail breaking your iPhone will make it lose its warranty, so if you have to jail break your iPhone you will be doing so at your own risk.

2. After installing the Quickpwn, an application called Cydia is installed on your phone, run the Cydia and search for iPhoneModem by addition and install on your iPhone. This application may not fully agree with the terms and conditions of Apple the makers of the iPhone. That was why you needed to first jail break your iPhone before you can use the iPhoneModem application with your iPhone.

3. When you are through with installing the iPhoneModem on your iPhone, also visit iPhonemodem (Windows) or (Mac), download and install the helper app on your laptop and click connect. Remember this is a trail version; the full version is sold for $9.99 Visit  iPhoneModem  for more information. This application will set up an adhoc network. Then turn on the wifi network in your iPhone, next open the iPhone modem application on your iPhone, a connection will be made between these two applications (iPhoneModem in your iPhone and the iPhone helper application on your laptop). Now your laptop is connected to a high speed internet using your iPhone as a wireless modem. Open your browser and start surfing the web.

You should consider the type of network you are connected on… is it a 3G?
