Has Social Media made us anti-social?

July 22, 2013 By Nwosu Desmond 28 Comments

Social media was created to strengthen social ties and not server them an opinion few people hold today. In this era of social media, relationships are built on the internet and lived through on the internet. People now make friends with people they have no intention of ever meeting. Now people prefer to live their lives through a screen rather than savoring the moments, have people lost touch of reality? Has social media made us anti-social?

Before the social media was born people related with one another in a more physical way than the virtual means in the social media world as it is today. When people can actually have conversations with their friends physically and they listened and participated. Real life relationships have been redefined and today it is common to see people spend their day in front of a screen chatting and “socializing”.

Has Social Media made us anti-social?

Has Social Media made us anti-social?

The idea of social media is amazing; it connects us to the world with no language, location or even racial barriers. Or has it achieved quite the opposite? Now you see people chat and live their lives on the social media with minimal human contacts. Social media has created a new reality that has given license to different kinds of behaviors in humanity.

People now miss important moments while trying to write them on their favorite social networks. Instead of going out with friends and enjoying your time with friends and family, people just use the social media sites. Statistics has shown that there are more social media addicts each year than the previous year. We rely too much on the social media these days; we expect more from technology and the social media and less from each other.

I wonder how the human civilization would’ve survived this long if social media has been around from the onset? Think of it anyhow you like, but the truth remains that we rely on social media and technology so much these days to facilitate social communication but they can as well be deleterious to social interaction. You have to admit that communication through a machine cannot be the same as when face to face with someone.

Other will entirely argue differently, some will argue that social media has boasted their interactions and relationships and has made them more social. Social media can now allow us to know what our friend in other part of the world is doing at any point in time. They have claimed that social media has made it easier to relate with one another.

A very brilliant question Desmond and one that requires an answer too. Everything you talked here really resonated with me.

People now prefer the internet relationship today to the real like relationships and that is why they are often duped and disappointed because, most of the people claiming to be your friend on the internet are just Wolf’s in Sheep clothing.

Thanks for sharing this with the bizsugar community.

Social media works if you unplug.

I accept social media has disadvantages as well. It reduced the real connection with people. It reduced our speaking skills and so many. Submitted my entry to the poll.
    Thanks

Rightly pointed out. We are becoming increasingly “dependent” upon social networking sites to stay in touch with each other. Which is not a very healthy sign.

Thanks Ryan, being able to know when “plug in” and when to “un-plug” could make a whole lot of difference on the use of social media, i still try to have conversations over drinks with my real life buddys.

Many times I began to ask myself that where is technology driving us to? Social network as a subset of technology is really manipulating the way things are done this day. I can’t imagine many people having online relationship just because of the reward like money, and all the like and this has in some ways contributed negatively to lives of many users who practises anti-social network user like landing them in jail for fraud etc. I really comply with your point here.

    Hi Nwosu,

It’s really very difficult question. There are equally stronger arguments for and against each of the parties. On one hand it’s offering never possible connections and relationship and on the other it made us negligent towards the nearer ones.

    Hi Nwosu Mavtrevor,

Thanks for sharing this very discussing topic that one should not neglect .I believe yes it has made us anti social in real life that is very important. People just sit at home feel lazy to go out an meet people so they prefer chats ,texting etc. This should not be happening one should give importance to social life also.

I vote for yes, the social media is making us more anti-social. Sure, it can be used as a great channel of communication, but the oversharing and overdependence on social media are the side effects which make us anti-social online zombies.

  24. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

    July 26, 2013 at 8:16 am

Julia i can’t agree with you less, the social media has made us overdependent on it for communication and this is hurting our native way of living greatly even without us realizing it. Thanks for voting and commenting, visit again.

    Hey Nwosu…
You have brought up a widely-discussed topic of the time…whether social media has made us anti-social…
Well may be the answer is yes….but its only relevant to some extent….
True that people spend most of their time on Facebook, twitter, WhatsApp and so on…and they have no time to socialize with their relatives neighbors and friends in person…
But we cannot ignore that social media has made it possible to connect to numerous people that would not be possible otherwise….
For instance I myself have got in touch with my old school fiends with whom I had lost all connections…All thanks to social media…
Thus according to me if we can balance social media networking and our actual social life…Social media will be a help rather than a harm in making us more social…:)

You couldn’t be more correct Debasmita, Social media by itself is not a bad thing, in fact its the best thing to have happened to this world since the last decade, but people abuse its use and this has affected lives in countless ways, people should be reminded to create a balance between their social media activities and their real life, make time to hang out with your real life friends while you maintain a safe relationship with your virtual friends.
