The BBM for Android recently received an update with the introduction of new features such as BBM Channels and BBM Voice. Over new 100 emotions were also added to the new app but most notably, the BBM 2.0 for Android now supports Gingerbread 2.3.x version.
In an earlier article I published on this blog titled “Can I install BBM on Gingerbread?” I advised that if BBM is to really compete with the likes of Whatsapp and Viber then it must update its BBM for Android app to support 2.3.x Gingerbread OS devices and other OS platforms.
The percentage of Android Gingerbread users is still significant enough not to cut them off as this will mean denying a lot of smartphone users the opportunity to communicate with their friends. BBM must have recognized this and decided to update the BBM for Android app to support Gingerbread 2.3.x Smartphones.
BBM Voice
BBM Voice allows BBM users to place a voice call to one another. BBM Voice is just like Skype or Viber’s VoIP calling service. To use the BBM Voice feature simply tap the green icon in the top right-hand corner of a chat conversation to call the person.
BBM Channels
BBM Channels is the feature that differentiates BBM from other mobile messaging apps like Whatsapp. The BBM Channels allow users to create Channels based on their interests and invite others to join in with the conversation.
The BBM Channels allows people with same interest to share ideas and news. For example users with interest in photography can share pictures and fans of Arsenal can keep in touch with their favorite team.
Location Sharing
Location sharing is also one of the new features of BBM 2.0 for Android that lets users share their real-time location through BBM, making it easier for friends to find their friends when they are out and about. You can even specify how long you’d like to share your location and with who.
Dropbox Integration
BBM 2.0 for Android also has another awesome feature that allows users to quickly share Dropbox files with other BBM contacts.
Emotions
There are over 100 new emotions to easily express yourself in the BBM 2.0 for Android.

I often wondered how BlackBerry reached that decision so I assumed it was either a security flaw in Gingerbread or the developer was just bad. Thanks for the update!
BBM for Gingerbread? Well, that would be really helpful. I have had a couple of issue with installing BBM in Gingerbread version of Android in the past. I got to discover that there was no support.
With this news a lot of android 2.3xxx users would be endeared to this messaging platform.

Blackberry may have realized the huge population of users they may have missed out on and the huge search on Google for BBM on Gingerbread queries and decided to do something about it.
Yes now BBM can work on Android Gingerbread 2.3.x version with a lot of great features notably the BBM Voice that lets you make calls with other BBM contacts, BBM Channels, Location sharing and lots of new emotions.
Features like BBM Video is still missing, i hope that in their next update they will make it available. I hope you can find the download link for the BBM for Android in the post.
