Manual Updates for Microsoft Security Essentials

August 16, 2012 By Nwosu Desmond 2 Comments

Microsoft Security Essentials is the antivirus program from Microsoft. This antivirus program provides protection against different types of malware. So many Windows computer users use this antivirus as it is known to rely on virus definitions to combat malware. But one problem its users always encounter is its update. MSE is supposed to automatically check and download virus definition updates which as published three times a day, but most times this antivirus fails to download its update. Today I want to show you how you can perform manual updates for Microsoft Security Essentials.

How to perform Manual updates for Microsoft Security Essentials

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on my laptop as my only antivirus program and as my primary security protection for my PC aside USB security program, so I always ensure I keep it up to date always. Whenever I try to automatically update it and for whatsoever reason it fails, I’ll follow this simple method I am about showing you how i perform manual updates for Microsoft Security Essentials in my computer.

First you have to determine if your system is a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows operating environment. And to do that simply right click on My Computer and chose properties just as illustrated on the image below. Step 1 will show you the version of operating system your PC is running on and step 2 will show you the version of Windows operating environment.

Next is click here to visit the Microsoft Security Essentials manual update download page, where you will download the appropriate update version of the program. There are download links for both 32-bit and 64-bit version of the windows update. Click on the appropriate link for your Windows version to start the download, the size of the update is always over 62MB.

If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows and download the 32-bit version of the update, the Microsoft Security Essentials won’t work, so you must download the appropriate version of your Windows version.

On completion of the download, Run to install the definition update. The file will be extracted to indicate the update is installing. After awhile, try to update your MSE by clicking on Update and examine the definition status.
