Unusual Methods to increase blog traffic in 2013

May 1, 2013 By Nwosu Desmond 56 Comments

Building a blog is the easy part, making it successful is the hard part. The success of your blog depends on the amount of traffic it receives.  Every blogger worry about the best and effective methods to drive traffic to their blog, everyday it’s being talked about, published on blogs yet most blogger’s still find it hard achieving this feat.

It is useless when you write quality contents but no one reads them, it is hard work producing quality contents on your website but it is even a harder work driving a great deal of traffic to your site. I know I have written about ways to increase blog traffic in this blog but today I don’t intend to discuss such usual methods of increasing blog traffic, the title states “Unusual methods to increase blog traffic in 2013” so today I am going to discuss unusual methods to increase blog traffic.

This unusual methods to increase blog traffic involves things we don’t often do that can result in increased blog traffic is well managed and executed. It is no blackhat method as Google and other search engines are always against such methods. So let’s get down to unusual things we can do to increase blog traffic.

Unusual Methods to Increase Blog Traffic

Unusual Methods to Increase Blog Traffic:

Content Curation: Most blogger do not have a clue about this and how they can drive massive traffic to their blogs by simply curating related and interesting topics. If you are a blogger and you do not use Content Curation sites like Scoop.it then you have been missing out from so much traffic, get on board now. Curate other interesting topics related to your blog niche alongside with yours and this way you will generate a massive amount of blog traffic.

Content Syndication: I have earlier discussed this topic on a blog post titled “Content Syndication – How it can improve your blog’s traffic”.  I recommend you read this article. The benefits of content syndication cannot be over-emphasized, not only will it increase your blog traffic it will also improve your content outreach to the wider world. I use quite a good number of content syndication sites (Bizsugar, Bloggers, Inbound, Chime, Snip.it, Triberr, Rebelmouse etc ) and drive massive amount of traffic to my blog.

Social Blog Communities: As much as we need social media signal to increase SERP we can also make good use of it to drive blog traffic. I joined a good number of social blog communities with great interests like commenting on fellow member’s blogs, voting for member’s posts on content syndication sites, sharing fellow member’s posts on social networks. The amount of traffic generated via this method is massive. Imagine 20 bloggers like you sharing your posts everyday on the various social networks they belonged as you of course reciprocate same gesture; just imagine the amount of traffic that can be generated from it. So search and join active social blogging communities on Facebook and other social media networks you may belong.

Turn your blog posts into PDF or slides and submit to eBook Stores: This is yet another unusual method on could use to increase blog traffic, convert your blog posts into a PDF file using a browser plugin called Print Friendly and submit them to eBook stores. My favorite eBook store is Scribd, there are still other good ones like free-ebooks, thefreesite, e-library etc. You can also turn your blog posts into PowerPoint slides and post them on Slideshare. This method is unusual but effective, try and leave html links within your ebooks or slide so the reader can always refer back to your blog for further reading.

Forum/Blog Commenting: If you are a blogger and you do not engage in forum or blog commenting, then you have been missing out from a lot of blog traffic. The good thing about blog commenting especially those with CommentLuv plugin is not just to gain blog traffic but to also earn a backlink. Same with forum commenting, simply use your site URL as your forum signature and when you make comments it will be displayed alongside your posts, make meaningful contributions to forum threads and see the amount of traffic you can drive to your blog via this unusual method. So join active forums/blogs and start commenting today.

Join Tweet Exchange Sites: Tweet exchange has been my most secret blog traffic weapon and I just unleashed it to you. The idea is pretty simple, tweet other user’s posts and earn points and use the points to schedule your own posts to be shared. I belong to quite a handful of such sites but I have trimmed it down to just one – JustRetweet. Imagine your tweet being shared by hundreds of other popular bloggers. This method not only increase your social media signal but also generate massive amount of blog traffic.

Giveaways: This is not something many bloggers are used to. Giveaways are unusual blog traffic method that can generate massive blog traffic, simply give away something after a contest. Get your visitors to share your blog posts to the various social networks they belong, subscribe to your feeds etc and at the end of the contest you give away a gift.

Conclusion:

Just like I promised you at the beginning of this article that I am only going to discuss unusual methods to increase blog traffic, I hope you find these methods unusual but effective in generating massive blog traffic. Let me hear what you think, use the comment form below to share with me. If you know other unusual methods to increase blog traffic you can as well add via your comments, remember to subscribe to my RSS.

    Hi Nwosu,
I am so glad that I subscribed to your newsletter which helps me read your latest posts as soon as you publish them!
    This is a wonderful write-up!
I have seen so many bloggers sharing “top ideas” and “best suggestions”. I am disappointed 98% of those articles which just present regurgitated content.
But this one by you is fabulous.
I already joined Just retweet. And simply loved your suggestion about submitting blog posts to an eBook store.
    Brilliant, out-of-the-box ideas. Truly unusual!
    Thanks a ton. :)

Thank you Nwosu for another greatly useful post. I found I’m doing most of them except creating PDF or eBooks yet. I think I need to wet my feet in that pond as well.

I’m not getting much traffic from curation and syndication but I believe the SEO value of those sites will help to rank better in search engines. However the blogging Communities in social networks and tweet exchange drive in good traffic.

This is very obvious that giveaways bring in more traffic and I’m planning to host regular giveaways soon.

Awesome ways to increase traffic. I would agree with the giveaway part. Giveaways increase the traffic by up to a factor of 3 for sure :D

    Hi Nwosu,

I’ve also had good experience with syndicating my content across other websites, especially document sharing sites like SlideShare, I also use Scribd, DocStoc and Issuu which are the best I could find, and they all leave all your links intact.
And of course the social sharing sites are great, I use mostly Triberr and JustRetweet but recently I found a site called Viral Content Buzz which also works with Pinterest pins and StumbleUpon shares.

Thanks for the tips my friend, cheers.

    May 3, 2013 at 2:30 am

    Hi Nwosu,

While I agree that content syndication can increase your traffic, you still has to be very careful with content syndication. If done wrong, you can do more harm to your website than good. It can create duplicate content issues. Don’t syndicate content on websites that just copy your complete website and show it to their users. Choose carefully!

I recently saw couple blogs getting penalized by Google due to bad content syndication and I wrote about that so you should check this page for more details:
    http://izrada-web-sajtova-beograd.com/blog/can-content-syndication-hurt-seo

    Thanks for great share!
I never heard about tweet exchange before :)

  36. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

    May 3, 2013 at 7:32 am

Bojan if you check out my list you will notice that i didn’t include sites like Zimbio that copy your whole contents, these ones i listed only show excepts of your content and a link back to it. I had that in mind while writing this article. Thanks for your contribution.

    Hey Desmond,
This is really an unusual way of driving traffic to a blog. I’ve heard and used most of the ones you mentioned here and they are really very effective.

It was since i started getting involved with content syndication that my traffic started going up. I really agree with you that where the main works lies when it comes to blogging is not on creating the blog but, on promoting it.

A very interesting post Desmond, thanks for sharing man.

This is really a one of a kind post indeed. Content curation and syndication is really a very effective methods of driving quality traffic to a blog. Its simple yet, very effective.

I’ve also used and is still using most of the other methods you mentioned too. Giveaways is really another huge method. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the tip about content curation. I have tried it but I agree with you. I don’t think I really understand what it is. Now syndication definitely works. Thanks for the tips. I will give it another try. Why don’t my posts show upon your comment luv?

Sharing your ideas through PDFs( without even monetizing it ) still boosts your credibility as a writer/blogger, which may further recoil into twice or thrice your efforts if in case it will not drive traffic.

I have an entertainment website with mostly images but lately I started to post articles too. It’s really good to see some new ideas to boost my traffic and I think I will start “Content Curation” and “Content Syndication” because these two seems to be the easiest and the quickest ones to see results.
I have tried “Tweet Exchange Sites” but they were complete disasters for me. Absolute zero traffic because they had mostly followers from these exchange sites and they were like bots. :/

Interesting. Notice most of the unusual methods above have a similarity. Which is value. You provide great value in order to attract people over. I have something to add on, which is joining groups in LinkedIn. Set up a linkedIn account and organize your profile. Look for groups in LinkedIn of your niche and contribute to the discussion. I am sure this is a great platform to increase traffic. :)

Sharing is caring. Sharing value and your value get shared. :)
