How You Can Improve Your WordPress Blog with Tumblr

October 19, 2013 By Nwosu Desmond 25 Comments

Did the title catch your attention? Are you curious to know how you can improve your WordPress blog with Tumblr? Today I want to share a secret with you on “How You Can Improve Your WordPress Blog with Tumblr”.

Tumblr is more than a blogging platform, it is a social networking site combined with a blogging platform which makes it awesome to use for microblogging. Tumblr has seen massive growth over the past few years as more and more people are finding more reasons to use it. In fact Tumblr is the fastest growing social network on the internet today.

How You Can Improve Your WordPress Blog with Tumblr

Tumblr has an easy to use interface and most importantly a built-in community that repeatedly share contents via reblogging, just like retweeting on Twitter or share on Facebook. Tumblr reblogging can help to increase your blog reach, more contents are going viral with this feature.

Some smart bloggers and webmasters over the years have taken advantage of Tumblr in promoting their sites, not only can Tumblr send huge traffic to your blog, you can also build quality backlinks to your blog with Tumblr. Let me show you exactly how;

First create an account on Tumblr and make sure the name looks like your blog name for example I have http://www.tumblr.com/blog/mavtrevor & http://www.tumblr.com/blog/netmediablog which is my Tumblr personal blog and that of Netmediablog respectively.

Next use tool like IFTTT or plugins like Tumblrize or Tumble plugin to automate the sharing of your posts to your Tumblr account, I prefer IFTTT than the plugin methods since am trying to reduce the number of plugins I use on my blog. So anytime you publish a new post, an excerpt of your post will be automatically published on your Tumblr account. You will find recipes that can share your posts from your WordPress blog to Tumblr automatically.

Must Read: How bloggers can use IFTTT in blog promotion.

The good part is that a backlink to the original content on your site will be published alongside it. Now you have gained a quality backlink to your post even without having to visit Tumblr always. Tumblr also allows you to create an ‘about’ and ‘contact’ page where your readers can find out more about your blog.

Then as more and more people begin to visit your Tumblr site, you will begin to gain followers and most likely those followers who find your content informative will reblog it. No matter the number of times a post is reblogged it still retains the original source link to your blog.

People will most likely want to read the full post when your Tumblr excerpt grabs their attention and will follow the source link back to your blog. Tumblr allows you to define a default URL such that whenever someone clicks on your Tumblr posts they will be redirected to the defined URL which in this case should be your WordPress blog.

Not only will you gain backlink from Tumblr, you can also drive a lot of traffic to your blog. The best part is that you don’t have to spend much time at all on Tumblr to take advantage of it in improving your WordPress blog.

Another way Tumblr can improve your WordPress blog is in its ability to link to other social media sites like Facebook and twitter. Tumble allows you to link your posts to these social networks, once you publish a post on your Tumblr account, it will automatically be shared to those linked social media sites.

To drive quality traffic to your WordPress blog from Tumblr, ensure to use high quality images and videos as it has been proven that people click mostly of graphical content more than textual contents on Tumblr.

Now I hope you will create your Tumblr account and start using Tumblr to your own advantage, tap into the traffic on this site and use it to improve your WordPress blog. If you have any contributions please use the comment section below.

    Hi Nwosu,

I have not used Tumblr yet but can see why you would go this route; plenty of link juice and traffic flowing through this platform, which is good for everybody involved.

Thanks for the share and nudge ;)

    Hi Nwosu,

It is an interesting and smart trick. And thanks for pointing out that images and videos work better than textual posts.

BTW, I wonder how easy would it be to promote the blog in Tumbler? Don’t we need to do double promotion? I mean promoting our own blog and the blog in Tumbler?

    Hey Nwosu,

Nice share big bros! I once was using Tumblr to share my post but all of a sudden I stopped maybe because I forgot my password. This post has now trigger me to create another account and I will also be benefiting it soon.

Like seriously? Tumblr also has a plugin on wordpress. I never knew that one save for now. Well, I don’t go through that route as I am trying to reduce my plugins. I currently have 21. So what I do is that I share it from the sharing option Jetpark allows.

Thanks for sharing this all important post with us today. You are the best! You should enjoy the rest of your day. :)

I’m interested in trying this, thanks for the idea.
I can appreciate the benefit of having the additional links, but does Google not penalize you for the duplicate content?

Tumblr is like combination of a social media and a blogging platform, it already has its own community so all you need to do is get in the mix and the rest can run on automated mode.

Yes if you use Jetpack you can also link your Tumblr account so your posts can be automatically shared when you publish.

  8. Nwosu Mavtrevor says

Its not a duplicate content because only an excerpt of your post will be shared’ take a look at my account’ its just like curated contents on Scoop.it

    H Nwosu,

Never tried Tumblr before. I wanted to see how your Tumblr blogs look like and I checked the two links you provided inside the article… I was requested to login. So… the links you provided are quite useless, aren’t they? A screen capture taken from your blog would be more useful than 2 links that redirect the visitor to the same page where he’s asked to login ;-)

    Adrian

P.S. Your CL plugin doesn’t seem to work. While writing this comment… it doesn’t display my latest post. Oh, and I see 2 identical messages plus 2 check boxes that require to confirm that I’m not a spammer. Weird!

One thing I would recommend is that you post other things on your tumblr account other than your blog repost. Otherwise it tends to just look like a dumping ground for your blog :)
