Broken Links: Risks of embedding objects from external sources

April 12, 2012 By Nwosu Desmond Leave a Comment

It is a common practice for bloggers to embed objects from external sources on their blogs. It could be links, images, videos etc. Sometimes we simply link to an external image source or videos without considering the dangers of this practice. Embedding objects like images, videos etc from an external source/website on our blogs may result to broken links someday when the website owner decides to shutdown his website, or take the content down.

So many people use hosted images from external sources on their blogs, in the case or suspension of the image owner’s account, the linked image disappears from the web and this will result to a broken image link on any blog or website anywhere that links to it. It could even be either that the embed coded or permission has changed.

As much as this practice is not so safe to use, there is also a safe way to check for broken links on your blog. Your site’s reputation can be affected when there are broken links on your site, imagine the frustration it will give to a visitor when he couldn’t find a link to a very important search on your website? They may never come back ever again. Broken link will also affect your blog’s rating on search engines.

I recommend you scan your blog from time to time for broken links. Use any online broken link checker you can afford to check your site for broken or dead links. You can use the Broken Link Checker tools to simple scan your blog for broken links. You can also Use the Google search query for Online Broken Link Checker  to search for more of these tools and validate your site of broken links.

If you are a WordPress user, you can also install the Broken Link Checker plugin on your blog. This Plugin will check your whole blog and produce detailed report with the links checked; broken image links so you can know which links you are to edit to fix the errors.
